How to Unload a Dry Bulk Trailer

To unload a dry bulk trailer, first, use a safety pin to firmly connect the discharge hose from the trailer’s discharge pipe to the receiving line of the facility. Next, engage the truck’s power take-off to start the air compressor and make sure that the exhaust valve is fully closed. Gradually open the inflation valve to fluidise the dry bulk product, establishing the tank pressure to the optimal operating level-usually between 12 and 15 psi, depending on the density of the material. Once the correct tank pressure and line pressure are reached, slowly open the discharge valve on the first silo to start the discharge process. During the entire unloading phase, the pressure gauge is continuously monitored, and the top intake valve and inflation valve are carefully balanced to maintain a stable flow and prevent pipeline blockage. When the bunker becomes empty-manifested by a sudden drop in pressure and a hollow sound-its discharge valve is closed and the process is repeated for the remaining bunkers. Finally, vent the tank to release all excess pressure and flush the discharge line thoroughly before disconnecting.

Accurate understanding of how to unload dry bulk trailers (often referred to as pneumatic trailers) is essential to ensure efficiency and safety. Because pneumatic trailers rely on compressed air to push dry or granular materials into the receiving silos, a precise balance between airflow and tank pressure is key to smooth operation.

The following is a detailed breakdown of the system process, which can ensure that you can safely unload dry bulk products without pipeline blockage.

Firmly Connect the pipeline

Before introducing any air into the system, the first task is to establish a safe passage for the material. First, connect the discharge hose from the trailer’s discharge pipe directly to the receiving line of the facility. It is essential that you use a safety pin (also known as an anti-sling rope or safety clip in some places) on all cam lock joints. Since the system will soon be under great pressure, these safety pins can ensure that the hose will not fall off during the unloading process, thereby preventing dangerous burst accidents.

Engage the power take-off and start the air compressor

Once the hose is locked in place, the system can be supplied with air. Engage the power take-off of the truck to start the pneumatic air compressor. Before the air compressor starts to push air into the trailer, repeatedly confirm that the exhaust valve is fully closed. If this valve is open, the compressed air will be discharged directly into the atmosphere, so that the required pressure cannot be built up in the tank.

Fluid material and establish tank pressure

Dry bulk cargo needs to be “fluidized”-that is, air mixed with solid powder or granules so that it flows like a liquid. To achieve these 1 goals, gradually open the inflation valve. Watch your meter closely as air enters the silo. Your goal is to build tank pressure to the optimum operating level. Depending on the specific material density you are transporting, the target pressure is usually between 12 and 15 psi. Achieving this correct tank pressure and line pressure ensures that there is sufficient force to push the product into the receiving silo.

Fluid material and establish tank pressure

Start the unloading process

After the inflation is completed and the pressure is stable between 12 and 15 psi, you can start conveying materials. Starting from the first silo, slowly open the discharge valve on that silo. The valve must be opened gradually; if it is opened too quickly, it may cause excessive material to flood the discharge pipe instantaneously, causing serious blockage immediately.

Monitoring instruments and balancing valves

Unloading a dry bulk trailer is definitely not a “set it up and leave it alone” process. You must continuously monitor the pressure gauge throughout the discharge phase. The secret to maintaining a steady flow is to carefully balance the top intake and inflation valves.

  • If the line pressure starts to soar, the mixture is too heavy. You need to adjust the valve to introduce more air and reduce the amount of product to prevent pipeline blockage.
  • If the pressure drops too low, you have blown in too much empty air and insufficient material.

Active monitoring and timely adjustment can keep the material flowing smoothly and efficiently.

Empty the silo and switch

You must rely on sensory cues to determine when the silo has finished unloading. When the first silo is completely emptied, you will notice two obvious signs: the pressure on the meter suddenly drops, and the silo itself will emit a clear hollow echo.

Once these signs are observed, close the discharge valve on the empty silo. Then, just repeat the exact same process for the remaining silos-methodically moving from one silo to the next until the entire trailer is emptied.

Final venting and line flushing

After the last silo is emptied and its discharge valve is closed, you must safely depressurize the entire system. Open the vent valve to vent the tank and release any excess pressure. At the same time, let the air compressor continue to run for a while to thoroughly flush any product remaining in the discharge pipe. Only after the pressure is completely released and the pipeline is completely unblocked can the discharge hose be safely disconnected and the discharge work can be successfully completed.
